Interviews Stories Deutsche Version 1. Als erstes würde ich gerne etwas über das Konzept von "Strength & Honour" wissen. Der Bandname 7th Legion, der Albumtitel, der Helm auf dem Coverfoto und das Sample aus dem Film Gladiator zu Beginn des ersten Songs: Ist das ein Konzept oder reiner Zufall ? Ich denke nicht, dass wir jemals ein bestimmtes Konzept für das Album geplant hatten, das eine führte einfach zum anderen. Wir kamen auf den Albumtitel, als wir "Gladiator" sahen, deshalb ist das Sample am Anfang des ersten Songs kein Zufall. Im Grunde ist die Idee des Albums, Stärke zu haben für unser tägliches Leben, unsere Wurzeln in Ehren zu halten und stolz auf das zu sein, wer wir sind und wo wir herkommen. Auf der anderen Seite reflektiert das Cover ein zweischneidiges Schwert: nicht einmal der stärkste und meist geehrte Mann überdauert für immer. Es schien einfach ein guter Weg, diese Gedanken auszudrücken, aber es ist definitiv kein Konzept, welchem wir bei unseren anderen Sachen folgen oder irgendwas in die Richtung. 2. Unabhängig vom Konzept, hat der Name 7th Legion eine bestimmte Bedeutung ? Nicht wirklich, es hört sich irgendwie nur gut an. Wir dachten nicht wirklich daran, wenn wir uns den Namen überlegten, aber ich denke, diese Legion ist ein guter Vergleich zur Hardcore Szene, in der Leute verschiedenster Hinergründe zusammen kommen, um für eine gemeinsame Sache zu kämpfen. 3. Als nächstes würde ich Euch bitten, mir einen Eindruck Eurer Bandgeschichte zu geben. Wie wurde die Band 7th Legion gegründet ? Alles fing so vor zweieinhalb Jahren als Nebenprojekt zu unseren anderen Bands an. Wir fingen einfach aus Spaß an zu spielen und dachten zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nicht daran, eine Band zu gründen. Nach zwei Monaten proben hatten wir vier Songs geschrieben und entschieden uns, eine 7" namens "K.L.F." aufzunehmen, da ein Freund von uns in einem Studio arbeitete. Das Ganze kostete uns 8 Stunden inklusive mixen und das kann man von Zeit zu Zeit noch hören. Wie auch immer, den Leuten schien es zu gefallen und so begannen wir, Shows zu spielen und das Ganze ein wenig ernster zu nehmen. Als wir das Schreiben für die MCD fertig hatten, wussten wir, dass wir dabei bleiben. Wir waren und sind immer noch sehr aufgeregt darüber, wie alles zustande kam und die Art und Weise, wie die Fans "Strength & Honour" aufnahmen, war natürlich auch sehr erstaunlich. Das Beste an dieser Band ist, dass wir weiterhin Songs schreiben und alles sehr spontan und aufrichtig machen und ich denke, das kann man definitiv in unsere Musik hören. 4. Ist es möglich für Euch, von der Musik zu leben ? Was macht Ihr, um Geld für das tägliche Leben zu haben ? Nicht in diesem Leben. Der Markt für Hardcore ist sehr klein hier in Finnland, deshalb machen wir im Grunde genommen kein Geld damit. Auf eine Weise würde natürlich ein Traum in Erfüllung gehen, wenn man von dem leben könnte, was man liebt, aber auf der anderen Seite würde das bedeuten, das viele Leute involviert wären, die das Essentielle an Hardcore nicht verstehen und das ist etwas, was ich nicht sehen möchte: Hatebreed, die zu einem weiteren Limp Bizkit werden. Um also durchs tägliche Leben zu kommen, gehen drei von uns studieren und die beiden anderen arbeiten ganztags. 5. Ich weiß nicht wirklich viel über die finnische Hardcore Szene. Ihr seid die erste Band, die ich höre (und die einzige bisher). Ich dachte, nur Metal Bands kommen aus Finnland. Könnt Ihr mir einen Überblick über die finnische Hardcore Szene geben ? Es gibt eine wirklich gute Szene seit Jahren mit vielen guten Bands, aber es ist zur Zeit so, dass finnische Bands anfangen, Anerkennung im Ausland zu bekommen, vor allen Dingen aufgrund von Bands wie Morning After, Bolt und Down My Throat, welche finnischen Hardcore nach Europa brachten. Es gab Höhen und Tiefen in der Szene, aber zur Zeit sieht es eigentlich ganz gut aus und es wird eigentlich nur besser. Viele talentierte und hingebungsvolle Leute sind am Start, so dass ich sehr neugierig bin, was die Zukunft für unsere Szene bringt. Die Szene ist sehr klein aber lebendig und Leute aus dem ganzen Land kommen gut miteinander aus. In einer kleinen Szene wie dieser ist das sehr wichtig. Es gibt so viele gute Bands aus Finnland zur Zeit, dass ich sie gar nicht alle benennen kann, aber wenn Du sie bisher noch nicht gehört hast, solltest Du Dir die Bands anhören, die ich vorher erwähnt habe, das wird Dir einen Eindruck vermitteln... 6. Bei Hardcore geht es immer um Unity. Gibt es diese Unity unter den Metal und Hardcore Bands in Finnland ? Außerhalb der Hardcore Szene gibt es wenig Unity, ich weiß nicht warum. Das Ganze ist immer noch sehr neu hier, deshalb wissen die Leute nicht immer, worum es dabei geht. Es sieht ein wenig gewalttätig aus und ist es auch ein bisschen aber wenn sie erst mal sehen, dass es nicht darum geht, Leute zu verprügeln, dann ist das alles zum Thema Unity und der Spaß wird geteilt. 7. Mein Eindruck Eurer Musik ist, dass Ihr verschiedene Stile mischt. Es hört sich ein wenig wie Right Direction an (das ist nur meine persönliche Meinung !), weil die auch einen ähnlichen Stil spielen. Was denkt Ihr über solche Vergleiche ? Es ist natürlich immer sehr schmeichelhaft mit großen Bands wie Right Direction verglichen zu werden, aber es wäre natürlich nett, wenn man sich an uns als eine einzigartige Band erinnert, die etwas Neues in die Szene gebracht hat. 8. Was sind die Einflüsse in Eurer Musik und was Eure Lieblingsbands ? Wir schreiben Musik aus unserem Herzen heraus, deshalb beeinflusst uns alles, was wir sehen und hören. Ich denke, man kann ein wenig von Blood For Blood, Skarhead und ähnlichen Bands hören. Die Lieblingsbands aufzuzählen wäre zu lang, wir hören viel...  9. Wie würdet Ihr Eure Art von Musik beschreiben ? Ich denke, es ist irgendwie schwer, das zu beschreiben, man sollte es einfach hören und sich seine eigene Meinung bilden. Aber wenn ich etwas sagen muss, würde ich sagen, es ist von Punkrock beeinflusster Old School mit gewissen Metal Elementen. Sehr einfach und aufrichtig. 10. Was ist die message von 7th Legion oder was wollt Ihr zum Ausdruck bringen ? Offensichtlich ist das Wichtigste an dieser Band, dass alle Spaß haben und das mit dem Publikum teilen. Wir haben keine message oder so was, aber wir versuchen zu verhindern, dass wir eine aussagelose Show ohne Einstellung spielen, was heutzutage sehr populär ist in der Hardcore Szene. Im Grunde erzählen wir nur Geschichten aus unserem Leben und hoffen, dass die Leute den Bezug zu ihrem Leben herstellen können. 11. Nun ein paar allgemeine Fragen. Könnt Ihr Euch an Euren ersten Auftritt erinnern ? Wie war das ? Hier in Finnland spielen wir nicht viele Shows, deshalb ist es immer ein großartiges Gefühl, auf die Bühne zu kommen. Ich kann mich nicht mehr erinnern, welcher Gig der erste war, aber ich erinnere mich an einige Male, wenn die Antwort der Leute einfach überwältigend war und das ist das, wofür wir leben. Die großartige Energie mit dem Publikum zu teilen, das ist das großartigste Gefühle, was man haben kann. 12. Was war Euer schlimmster Fehler oder Euer schlimmstes Erlebnis ? Es ist immer ein wenig riskant, wenn wir unterwegs sind ... Ich kann es nicht beschreiben, das sind so die Dinge, die man nicht in Worte fassen kann, wenn viel Bier und schlaflose Nächte beteiligt sind ... Ich denke, Hardcore und diese Band haben uns nur gute Erinnerungen gebracht, selbst die schlechten Momente werden zu guten im Laufe der Zeit. 13. Wenn es eine Sache gäbe, die Ihr in Eurem Leben ändern könntet, was wäre das ? Für mich als Person nichts. Es ist manchmal ganz schön Scheiße, aber es ist mein Leben und es hat mich zu der Person gemacht, die ich heute bin. Was die Hardcore Sache angeht, ich würde mehr Shows spielen wollen. 14. Das Album "Strength & Honour" ist kurz aber heftig. Ich würde gerne mehr davon hören. Was sind Eure Pläne für die Zukunft ? Wir planen, ein komplettes Album anfang nächsten Jahres aufzunehmen, es wird also definitiv mehr geben ... 15. Was ist mit einer Europa Tour ? Werden wir in den Genuss kommen, Euch live in Deutschland zu sehen ? Wir hoffen das wirklich ! Wir werden auf der European Hardcore Party diesen Herbst spielen und wir planen eine kleine Tour in Deutschland, den Niederlanden und Belgien zur selben Zeit. Gibt es zum Schluss noch etwas, das Ihr loswerden möchtet ? Vielen Dank für die Möglichkeit, dieses Interview zu machen, es ist uns eine Ehre ! First of all I would like to know something about the main concept of the album "Strength & Honour". The Band Name 7th Legion, the album title, the helmet on the cover pic and the sample from the movie "Gladiator" at the beginning of the first track: Is this a concept or pure coincidence? I don't think we ever planned to do a certain concept for the record, one thing just lead to another. We came up with the album title when we were watching "Gladiator", so putting a sample in the beginning of the first track is not a coincidence. Basically the idea in this record is to have strength to get through our every day life, honor our roots and feel pride for what we are and where we come from. The cover in the other hand reflects the two-edged sword; not even the strongest and the most honored man lasts forever. It just seemed as a good way to express these thoughts, but it's definitely not a concept we're going to follow all in our other releases or anything like that. 2. Apart from a main concept, does the Name 7th Legion have a special meaning for you? Not really, it just sounds good in a way. We didn't think this when we came up with the name, but I think that a legion is a good comparison to hardcore scene, where people from different backgrounds come together and fight for a common cause. 3. Next, I would please you to give me an impression of your band history. How was the band 7th Legion founded? It all began for about two and a half years ago as a side project to our other bands. We just started playing together for fun, so at that point we didn't mean to form any real band. After two months of rehearsing we had written four songs and we decided to record a 7" called "K.F.L" as a friend of ours was working in a studio. The whole thing took us about 8 hours including the mixing, and you can definitely hear that from time to time. However people seemed to be into our stuff, so we started to play shows and take the whole thing more seriously. When we had finished writing the material for the MCD we knew we were here to stay. We were, and still are, very excited how it turned out, and the way "Strength & Honour" was received by the crowd was really amazing, too. The best thing in this band is that we still write music and do things really spontaneous and sincere, and I think you can definitely hear it from our music. 4. Is it possible for you to live from the music? What do you do to get money for the daily life? Not in this lifetime. Market for hardcore music is really small here in Finland, so we're not basically getting any money out of it. In a way it would be a dream come true to get a living out of doing what you love, but in the other hand it would also need a lot of people involved who wouldn't understand the essence of hardcore, and that's something I would never want to see, Hatebreed turning to another limp bitzkit. So to get trough the daily life three of us study while the other two work full-time. 5. I don't know much about the Finnish hardcore scene. You are the first band I listen to (and the only one so far). I thought only metal bands are from Finland. Can you give me an overview of the Finnish hardcore scene? There has been a good scene here for years with a lot of good bands, but it's until now that Finnish bands are starting to get some recognition abroad, mainly because of bands like Morning After, Bolt and Down My Throat, who have brought Finnish hardcore to the common knowledge in Europe. There has been ups and downs in the scene, but at the moment it looks really good and things are only getting better. Lots of talented and dedicated people are involved, so I'm really curious to see what the future holds for our scene. The scene is rather small, but very vital and people from all over the country are getting along very well. In a small scene like this it's really important. There are so many good bands coming from Finland at the moment that I can't name them all, but if you haven't heard yet, you should definitely check out at least the bands I mentioned earlier, that should give you the right idea… 6. Hardcore is always about unity. Is there a unity among the hardcore and the metal bands in Finland? Outside hardcore scene there's not much unity, I don't know why. This whole thing is still quite new here, so people don't necessary know what it's all about. It looks violent and might seem a bit , but when they realize it's not about beating people up, that it's all about the unity and sharing the fun 7. My impression of your music is that it mixes several styles. It sounds a bit like Right Direction (that's just my personal opinion !), because they also playing this kind of music. What do you think about such comparisons? It's always flattering to be compared to great bands like Right Direction, but of course it would be nice to be remembered as a unique band that brought something new to hardcore music. 8. What are the influences in your music and what are your favorite bands? We write music from our hearts, so obviously everything we see and hear influences our music. I guess you can hear a bit of Blood For Blood, Skarhead and such. Favorite bands are too many to mention, everything goes… 9. How would you describe your kind of music? I guess it's kind of hard to describe, you should listen to it and then form your own opinion. But if I had to say something, I'd say it's punkrock influenced old school with some metal elements. Very simple and sincere. 10. What is the message of 7th Legion or what would you like to express? Obviously the most important thing in this band is to have fun and to share it with the audience. We don't have a massage or anything, but we're also trying to avoid the pointless show off attitude that seems to be quite popular in the hardcore scene nowadays. Basically we're just telling stories from our lives, and hope someone could find something to relate to. 11. Now some general questions. Could you remember your first band gig? How was it like? Here in Finland we don't have that much shows, so it's always a great feeling to get up on the stage. I can't remember which was the first appearance with this band, but I remember few times when the response from the crowd has been amazing, and these are the moments we all live for. To share the great energy with the audience, that's the greatest feeling you can get. 12. What was your worst mistake or your worst experience? It's always a bit hazardous when we're on the road… I can't come up with anything, these are the things you can't describe in words, when there's lots of beer and sleepless nights involved… I think hardcore and this band has given us only good memories, even the bad moments turn to golden as time goes by. 13. If there was just one thing you could change in your life, what would that be? As being an individual, nothing. Sometimes it's full of shit, but it's my life and it has made me the person I am today. As playing in hardcore band, I would like to play more shows. 14. The album "Strenght & Honour" is short but very amazing. I would like to hear more of that stuff. What are your plans for the future? We're planning to record a full length beginning of the next year, so there's definitely more to come… 15. What about a European Tour? Will we have the pleasure to see you live in Germany soon? We really hope so! We're going to play at the European hardcore party this fall, and we are planning to do a small tour in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium at the same time.
