Interviews StoriesAssertvon Patrick Frueh vom 19.07.20021. Zu aller erst mein Beileid über den Tod eures Schlagzeugers im April. Könntet Ihr uns erzählen, was passiert ist? Chris hatte einen sehr schweren epileptischen Anfall am elften April, bei dem sein Herz aussetzte. Freunde gaben ihm Mund-zu-Mund-Beatmung und die Rettungssanitäter versuchten ihn ohne Erfolg zu retten. Ein tragischer Tag für uns alle. 2. Assert waren mir ziemlich unbekannt bis ich Eure letzte CD "Insurrection Rocks" bekam. Was ist denn der Ursprung der Band, wie wurde sie gegründet? Assert bildeten sich Ende 1996, um echten, linken Arbeiterklasseeinfluß in die ziemlich stark von der Mittelklasse geprägte britische Punk/Hardcore-Szene zu bringen. Wir sehen es als unsere Pflicht an, mal richtig aufzuräumen. 3. Lieder wie N.W.F oder Lock Up The Poor zeigen einen großen Einfluß des Arbeiterklassethemas. Denkt Ihr, dass Eure Musik die Situation der Arbeiterklasse verbessern könnte? Assert hatte immer Bandmitglieder aus den Gebieten mit sozialem Wohnungsbau in den West Midlands in England. Wir hatten alle schlecht bezahlte Jobs und haben ständig darum gekämpft, ein anständiges Existenzniveau für unsere Familien zu erreichen. Wir schreiben und singen einfach, wie es für Leute wie uns ist. Wir hoffen, dass wir Menschen anspornen können für Dinge, an die sie glauben, sich einzusetzen und den Stolz der Arbeiterklasse zu zeigen. Unglücklicherweise denke ich kaum, dass unsere Musik das System, in dem wie leben, verändern kann, aber sie könnte unsere Sichtweise der Dinge verändern. 4. Sorgt Ihr euch auch um die Situation in der Dritten Welt wie in Why? oder ist es nur eine weiter Möglichkeit westliche Regierungen und Firmen zu kritisieren? Es ist eine Tatsache, dass die Dritte Welt durch westliche Regierungen und multi-nationalen Firmen zu Grunde gerichtet wird. Weshalb müssen an Orten wie Sierra Leone Kindern die Glieder abgehackt werden? Das ist eine schreckliche Art und Weise zu versuchen, die Leute unter Kontrolle zu bringen. Westliche Regierungen würden es vorziehen, diese Länder durch Seuchen und Hunger zu Grunde gehen zu lassen, als ihnen zu helfen. Sie greifen nur ein, wenn eine Marionettenregierung der Amerikaner an der Macht ist. Es scheint, dass ein Leben in Afrika weniger wert ist als im Westen und das ist falsch. 5. Ich habe einige Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen eurer Musik und Bands wie z.B. The Exploited bemerkt. Welche Bands und Stilrichtungen haben Assert am meisten beeinflusst?  Ich denke, wir haben einen speziellen "brit punk"-Sound gemischt mit ein wenig NYHC - Stil; Lower East Side Vibe! Es gibt jede Menge Bands, die uns aus allen Musikrichtungen beeinflussen. 6. Haben Assert eine spezielle Botschaft für die Punk/HC - Gemeinschaft? Unsere Botschaft ist "jederzeit, überall, jede Szene". Wir gehen da gerne raus und schaffen ein richtiges Chaos. Verstärker an, aufdrehen und abgehen. 7. Ich habe gehört, dass es sehr schwierig sein soll in London eine Show zu organisieren, weil die Leute nur zu Shows von bekannten Bands wie SOIA gehen. Wie ist die Situation im Rest Großbritanniens? Ja also wir haben erst neulich eine 3-Wochen-Tour durch das U.K. gemacht und man darf eben nicht vergessen, dass es ein kleines Land ist. Viele Kids kommen nur zu den großen Bands, aber dass sollte einen nicht davon abhalten, in nen Van zu steigen und sich ins Zeug zu legen. Es ist nicht schwer einen Auftritt in London zu bekommen, aber ich denke, dass London nichts spezielles oder besser ist, als die anderen Städte, wo wir schon überall gespielt haben. 8. Jetzt, da ich Eure neue CD kenne, würde ich gerne mal zu einer Show gehen. Es scheint, als ob Ihr Hamburg mögt. Zum Beispiel ist da ein Bild des Marquee. Was mögt Ihr an Hamburg? Wird es bald eine Europatour geben? Ich war schon einige Male in Hamburg und Assert haben auch schon mal in Hambugr gespielt und ich mag es. Es ist die Heimat von St.Pauli. Das ist cool. 9. Was sind die weiteren Pläne von Assert?  Wir würden gerne so schnell wie möglich wieder in Länder wie Deutschland kommen und dieses Jahr oder Anfang 2003 eine USA-Tour machen. Wir haben eine Split-Single mit Bostons The Freeze und dann noch ne Split mit CH3 aus dem Orange County im September. Unser viertes Album "Riotus Assembly" wird im Februar/März 2003 rauskommen. Wir mussten wegen des Todes unseres Drummers die Europatour mit Total Chaos im Juni/Juli absagen, hoffe aber sehr bald zurück zu sein. 10. Letzte Frage. Eine letzte Botschaft für die Leser von Coreground? Kommt und seht uns, wenn ihr die Chance kriegt und wir garantieren euch, dass ihr es genießt. Do you mind telling us what happenend? Chris had a massive epileptic seizure on April 11th which stopped his heart.Friends gave him mouth to mouth and the ambulence crew tried to save him but all to no avail;a tragic day for us all. 2. Assert were pretty much unknown to me before I got your last CD "Insurrection Rocks". What´s the background of the band, how was it founded? Assert formed in late 96' to offer some genuine left wing working class input into a pretty middle class controlled u.k. punk/hardcore scene.We consider it our duty to 'fuck shit up'!.  3. Some songs like N.W.F or Lock Up The Poor show a great influence of the working class topic. Do you think that your music may improve the situation of the working class? The whole of Assert(past and present) has had band members from the council estates of the west midlands in England.We have all had shit low paid jobs and constantly struggle to obtain a tolerable level of existence for our families.We just write and sing about what it is like for people like us.We hope we can inspire people to stand up for what they believe in and show some working class pride.unfortenately i don't think our music can change the system we live in but it could make us change the way we look at things. 4. Do you also care about the situation in the Third World like in Why? or is it just another way to criticize the western governments and big companies? The third world is ruined by western governments and multi-national corporations ,this is a fact of life.Why? do they have to chop the limbs off children in places such as sierra leone? it is an horrific way of trying to control the people.Western governments would rather those countries perish through disease and mass starvation then get any help.They will only step in if 'puppet' governments under the control of the U.S. administration are put into power.It seems that a life is worth less in Africa then it is in the west and this is wrong. 5. I noticed some similarities between your music and bands like The Exploited for example. Which Bands and styles influenced Assert most? I suppose we have a certain 'brit punk' sound mixed up with a bit of NYHC style ; lower east side vibe! there are a lot of bands who influence us from all different areas of the musical spectrum. 6. Do Assert have a special message to the HC/Punk community? Our message is 'any time ,any place, any scene ' we just like to get out there and create some anthemic mayhem.It's a case of 'turn it on,turn it up and let's tear it up'! 7. I have heard that it´s pretty difficult to organize a show in London because the people only go to shows of well known bands like SOIA. What´s the situation in the rest of the UK? Well we recently did a 3 week tour of the U.K. and let's not forget it's only a very small country! a lot of the kids will only come out for the big bands but that should not stop anyone getting in the van and working their balls off.It's not difficult to get gigs in london but i don't feel london is anything special or better than some of the other U.K. cities. we have played all over by working hard. 8. Now that I know your new CD I would like to go to one of your shows. Seems like you like Hamburg. For example there is a picture of the Marquee, my favourite venue here. What do you like about Hamburg.? Will there be an Europe tour in the near future? I've been to Hamburg a few times and Assert have played in Hamburg before, yeh! i dig the place baby! and it's the home of St.Pauli f.c. so it's cool. 9. What are the other plans of Assert? We would like to get back to countries like Germany a.s.a.p. and tour the U.S.A. this year or early 2003.We have a split single with Bostons The Freeze and then a split with CH3 from Orange county in september.Our fourth album 'Riotus assembly' will be out Feb/march 2003.We had to cancel a European tour in June /July with Total Chaos because of the death of our drummer Chris Burleigh,so, we hope to get back very soon. 10. Last question. Any final message for the readers of Coreground?
