Gebt uns eine kurze Zusammenfassung Eurer Bandgeschichte. Wie wurde Backfire gegründet? Wyb :Wir begannen 1994, kamen zusammen und haben fünf Mal geprobt und dann machten wir zwei Lieder und ein Demotape. Wir haben es Lost & Found geschickt und direkt einen Plattenvertrag bekommen. So haben wir sehr hart an einem Album gearbeitet, wir nahmen Rebel 4 Life bei Lost & Found auf. Danach haben wir eine 7 Inch bei Lost & Found aufgenommen, dann gab es eine große Auseinandersetzung mit Lost & Found und wir gingen zu Kingfisher. Während dieser Zeit hatten wir eine Tour durch ganz Europa mit Warzone. Wir brachten All Bets Are Off raus und dann nahmen wir Choose My Own Path auf. In der Zwischenzeit tourten wir mit 25 Ta Life und kleineren Bands durch Europa. Dann kamen wir zu I Scream, wir nahmen Still Dedicated auf und zwischenzeitlich - ihr habt wahrscheinlich davon gehört – erschoss sich unser Schlagzeuger, so dass wir ca. ein halbes Jahr eine Auszeit nahmen, wir machten gar nichts. Aber dann nahmen wir das neue Album auf und kamen zurück und wir tourten mit Madball, Biohazard, wir spielten überall in Europa. Es läuft wirklich alles richtig gut. In zwei Monaten gehen wir nach New York und nehmen mit Matt Henderson von Madball ein neues Album auf, die Typen von Biohazard und Cypress Hill werden da sein. Das wird spitze. 2. Ihr habt uns was über die Probleme bzw. Auseinandersetzung mit Lost & Found erzählt. Was ist passiert und seid Ihr noch immer wütend auf sie? Wyb : Wir sind noch immer wütend, aber es ist halt so … sie sagen, wir schulden ihnen Geld und wir sagen, sie schulden uns Geld. Pat : Es ist die Vergangenheit. Wir wollen es hinter uns lassen. Wyb : Sie sagen wir schulden ihnen so 10.000 DM, aber sie schulden uns so ca. 40.000 DM. Lost & Found bringen nur Rap-Scheiße raus und sie sind Schwuchteln, sie sind schwul, sie sind deutsche Stricher. 3. Ihr habt was wegen eures Schlagzeugers gesagt. Es gibt viele Geschichte und Gerüchte über seinen Tod in Deutschland. Was ist die wahre Geschichte? Wyb : Richie war seit 2 Jahren depressiv, er hatte Probleme als er sehr jung war, so als er elf Jahre alt war, hatte er sehr große Probleme. Und dann ist er aus dem Haus seiner Eltern ausgezogen, um alleine zu leben und er wurde verrückt und nach zwei Jahren ging er in nen Wald 20 Minuten von hier und erschoss sich. 4. Es gibt ne Geschichte in Deutschland, die besagt, dass es nach einem eurer Konzerte passiert ist. Wyb : Die letzte Show war eine Woche davor und wir sprachen mit ihm für eine Woche nicht du wir sollten ihn auf einer Party treffen und er kam nicht hin und in der gleichen Nacht ging er in den Wald, er nahm eine Waffe und erschoss sich. Danach haben wir für ein halbes Jahr Pause gemacht und wir kamen zurück mit Still Dedicated und wir kamen gestärkt zurück. Nach Still Dedicated haben wir auf jedem Festival gespielt, den großen Festivals.  Pat : Unser neuer Schlagzeuger Igor ist der Beste. Wyb : Er passt in die Band und er ist einzigartig. Wenn es ihn nicht gäbe, wäre es aus mit Backfire. 5. Was sind die Haupteinflüsse für Eure Musik? Pat : Unsere Lieblingsband für immer und ewig ist Madball, es ist die Nr. 1 Hardcore Band. Einfach die alten NY Hardcore Bands, sie spornen uns an. 6. Auf der Choose My Own Path habt Ihr Cover von Warzone, Slayer, Cro-Mags etc. Sind das auch Einflüsse? Pat : Ja. Wyb : Aus den alten Tagen, Die alten Slayer, die alten Cro-Mags. Wir mögen alle die gleiche Musik. Das ist eine wichtige Sache bei Backfire. Jedes Bandmitglied mag die gleiche Musik, Aber wir mögen auch Linkin Park. Ich liebe Linkin Park. Ich hasse Limp Bizkit, ich hasse Korn, aber Linkin Park ist eine wirklich gute Band. Macht kein Scheiß mit Linkin Park!! 7. Auf der Rebel 4 Life habt Ihr ein Lied über Leute, die an Straight Edge verloren gingen. Seid Ihr gegen Straight Edge oder habt Ihr eure Meinung geändert, weil auf der Still Dedicated habt Ihr ein Cover von Chain Of Strength? Pat : Als wir angefangen haben, war es eine andere Szene. Diese Szene ist tot. Sie akzeptierten nur sXe Bands, sXe Kids und sie gaben einen Scheiß für jeden anderen und wir gaben einen Scheiß auf sie. Jetzt ist das vorbei und alle Typen, die so waren, sind jetzt entspannt. Glaubt mir, ich wünschte, ich wäre Straight Edge, aber ich bin´s nicht. Aber ich respektiere es.  8. Vor zehn Minuten hab ich was über One Life Crew gefragt. 1997 gab´s ein OLC Cover auf dem Dynamo Festival. Es ist eine von meinen Lieblingsbands, aber in Deutschland ist es ein großes Problem wegen der Antifa. Pat : Ich hasse alle Extreme. Ich hasse Rechte, ich hasse Linke, Wir spielten dieses Lied bevor alle die Band hassten, aber wir lieben sie. Uns ist das egal. Wyb : Die Musik von OLC ist eine der Besten in der Welt. Aber die Texte ... wir kennen die Typen, es ist ein Witz. 9. In Deutschland denken viele Leute sogar, dass Bands wie ihr oder Right Direction rechts oder so was sind, weil ihr dieses ToughGuy Image habt. Was denkt Ihr über euer Image oder als ToughGuy abgestempelt zu werden? Pat : Wir sind harte Kerls. Wyb : Madball sind die härtesten Jungs auf der Welt, wir waren auf Tour mit Biohazard, sie sind wirklich zäh. Wenn jemand Scheiße über uns erzählt, dann schlagen wir ihn zusammen. Wenn mich das zum harten Kerl macht, dann bin ich ein harter Kerl. Ich bin keine Schwuchtel. Pat : Wenn ich für meine Freunde kämpfe und mich das zum harten Kerl macht, dann bin ich harter Kerl. 10. Auf der Still Dedicated habt Ihr ein Lied – Scum Of Society. Vor dem Lied ist ein Sample, wie man Obdachlose behandeln sollte. Denkt Ihr, dass das der richtige Weg ist? Wyb : Es ist auch ein Witz. Es ist aus einem Film mit Dennis Hopper und es hat nichts mit Obdachlosen zu tun, es geht um Junkies. Es ist über Heroinabhängige. Wir haben hier viele und es ist nicht das Beste, ihnen Geld zu geben. Wenn du einen von ihnen siehst und ihm Geld gibst, wird er Drogen kaufen. Aber wenn du ihn trittst und sagst, was zu Teufel los mit ihm ist, geh und arbeite, ist es sogar der bessere Weg. 11. Nun ne Witzfrage. Unterstützt Ihr noch die holländische Fußballnationalmannschaft?  Pat : Ja.100% Wyb : 1.000% Danke für Eure Zeit. Wir wissen das zu schätzen. Interview with Pat and Wyb from Backfire! (Maastricht, 09.08.2002) 1. Give us a short summary of your band history. How was Backfire! founded ? Wyb: We started in 1994 and we came together and made like 5 rehearsals and then we made 2 somgs and a demo tape. We sent it to Lost & Found Records and we got a record deal right away. So we worked very hard to record an album, we recorded the Rebel 4 Life album at Lost & Found Records. After it we recorded a 7 inch at Lost & Found, then we had a big fight with Lost & Found and went to King Fisher. During these days we had a tour with Warzone, we toured all over Europe with Warzone. We put out the album All Bets Are Off, after that we recorded the album Choose My Own Path. In the mean time we toured with 25 Ta Life and smaller bands through Europe. Then we came to I Sream Records, we recorded Still Dedicated and in the mean time our drummer, you´ve probably heard, he shot himself and died, so we took off like half a year, we didn´t do nothing. And then we recorded a new album and we came back and from then we toured with Madball, Biohazard, we played everywhere in Europe. It´s going really well. In two months we are going go to New York and record a new album with Matt Henderson from Madball, the guys from Biohazard gonna be there, the guys from Cypress Hill. That will be great. 2. You told us about the problems or fights with Lost & Found. What happened and are you still angry about them ? Wyb: We are still angry at them, but it´s like … they say we owe them money and we say, they owe us money. Pat: It´s in the past. We wanna leave it behind.  Wyb: They say we owe them like 10.000 DM, but they owe us like 40.000 DM. Lost and Found are only puts out rap shit and they are faggots, they are gay, they are German fuckers. 3. You said something about your drummer. There are a lot of stories or rumours about his death in Germany. What´s the true story ? Wyb: Richie was depressed for like two years, he had some problems when he was really young, when he was like 11 years old he had big problems. And then he went from his parents´ house to live alone and he went crazy and after two years he went to the woods 20 minutes from here and he shot himself. 4. There is a story in Germany which says that it happened after one of your concerts. Wyb: The last show was a week before and we didn´t talk to him for a week and we are supposed to meet him at a party and he didn´t show up and that same night he went into the woods, he took a gun and shot himself. After that we took a rest for half a year and we came back with Still Dedicated and we came out stronger. After Still Dedicated we played every festival, the big festivals. Pat: Our new drummer Igor is the best. Wyb: The new drummer is really good. Pat: He fits in the band and he is the only one. If he wasn´t alive, Backfire would be over. 5. What are the major influences in your music ? Pat: Our favourite band of all time is Madball, it´s the Nr. 1 hardcore band. Just the old New York hardcore bands, they are inspiring us.  6. On the Choose My Own Path you cover Warzone, Slayer Cro-Mags and stuff. Are these your influences ? Pat: Yeah. Wyb: From the old days. The old Slayer, the old Cro-Mags. We all like the same music. That´s an important thing in Backfire. Every band member likes the same music. But we like Linkin Park, too. I love Linkin Park. I hate Limp Bizkit, I hate Korn, but Linkin Park is a really good band. Don´t fuck with Linkin Park ! 7. On the Rebel 4 Life you had a song about guys lost to the straight edge. Are you against straight edge or did you change your opinion, because on the Still Dedicated you cover Chain Of Strength ? Pat: When we started out it was a different scene. The scene is dead. They only accepted straight edge bands, straight edge kids and they shit on everybody else and we shit back on them. Now it´s gone and all the guys who were like that are now relaxed. I wish I was straight edge, believe me, but I´m not. But I respect it. 8. 10 minutes ago I asked you about One Life Crew. In 1997 you covered OLC at the Dynamo Festival. It´s one of my favourite bands but in Germany it´s a great problem, because of the AntiFa. Pat: I hate all the extrems. I hate right wing, I hate left wing. We played that song because everybody hated the band, but we love them. We don´t care. Wyb: The music of One Life Crew is one of the best in the world. But the lyrics, … we know the guys, it´s a joke. 9. In Germany a lot of people they even think that bands like you or Right Direction are right wing or whatever, because you have this tough guy image. What do you think about your image or being labeled as a tough guy ? Pat: We are tough guys. Wyb: Madball are the toughest guys in the world, we´ve been on tour with Biohazard, they were really tough. When someone talks shit about us, we beat him up. If this makes me a tough guy, I´m a tough guy. I´m not a faggot. Pat: When I fight for my friends and it makes me a tough guy, I´m a tough guy. 10. On the Still Dedicated you have a song called Scum Of Society. In front of the song there is a smple about how to treat homeless people. Do you think that´s the right way ? Wyb: It´s a joke, too. It´s from a movie with Dennis Hopper and it´s not about homeless people, it´s about junkies. It´s about heroin addicts. We got a lot of them and it´s not the best thing to give them money. If you see one of them and give him money, he´s gonna buy drugs. But if you kick him and say what the fuck is wrong with you, go and get a job, it´s an even better way. 11. Now a funny question.
