BURDEN Interview for www.coreground.de
Nov. 2003 w/ Jason Kolins

Coreground: Please give us a short overview of the band and its members.

JK: Burden was started in May of 1997, by myself, Jason Kolins (vocals), and other original member Sean Spear (guitar). We set out to start a fast, heavy, positive straight edge hardcore band, write songs, play shows, record and tour. Six and a half years later, we have a demo, two 7"/ CDEPs, a full length CD/12" a split CD, have appeared on tons of comps around the world, toured throughout the USA, Canada, as well as two European tours. Seeing as we are breaking up, rounding out the final Burden lineup, is Adam Mitchell (bass), his brother Dave Mitchell (guitar), and our newest member, Jay Kehoe (drums), the lineup that recorded our newest 7"/CDEP "With Every Step Forward".

Coreground: So, how is it going with Vancouver´s hardcore scene in general?

JK: Oh man, Vancouver's scene has grown so much over the past year and a half or so, it is amazing, there are so many new awesome bands and kids, it's really awesome to see, as the scene here was so small and stale for so many years. I'm very, very happy to see it finally get awesome.. Bands to check out are Dissent and Blue Monday (who have members and ex-members of Burden), Go It Alone, In Stride, Dead Sure, New World On Fire, Hope Against, Born Of Ashes, Chuck Norris The Meaning Of This and the Javelin Reign.

Coreground: If you could name a band which you want to share a stage with ? who would that be?

JK: I would have to say without a doubt, my all time favorite band the Cro-Mags, with their 1986 'Age Of Quarrel' lineup, followed closely by Bad Brains, 'I Against I' era.

Coreground: When did you first get in touch with hardcore music? How was your first impression?

JK: I first got introduced to HC music in junior highschool at age 13, by a bunch of skateboarders I was skating with. I was a metalhead into Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth etc... and got introduced to such great bands as old COC, DRI, Dayglow Abortions, Misfits, Accused, and of course AF, Cro-Mags, Bad Brains etc... Those bands, aside from being fast and heavy, had so much more energy than the metal bands I was used to, plus, most had good things to say, and that changed my life for sure.

Coreground: As everyone can see, you are a straight edge band. But would you declare yourself as some sort of militant?

JK: Militant? No way, we aren't about any of that 'better than you' stuff, I think that's a bunch of shit, at every show we play, I make a point of making sure that everyone knows where we stand on the SXE issue, which is, we are a SXE band, and to us, it is a personal choice, and it doesn't matter if you are SXE or not. It's about respect, no one is better than anyone else, especially because of their lifestyle or diet.

Coreground: Who were or even is the best sXe Band all over the world? Why?

JK: Hmmmmm? That's a hard one, I guess I would have to say for myself anyways, my favorite musically, would probably be Judge. "Bringin' It Down", it's one of my faves, Gorilla Biscuits,Trial and Undertow are up there as well.
Influentially, traditional SXE bands of today wouldn't be around without Youth Of Today, they were the most important and influential SXE band ever, hands down, just not my personal favorite.

Coreground: What fact would you like to see changed in the hardcore scene? Or is anything as good as it could be?

JK: The one thing that has always bothered me, is the 'cool people' in the scene with attitudes, that look down on others that don't think, or look just like them, that has always bothered me, as well as people that won't give smaller bands a chance, just because the cool kids and popular bands in the scene won't give them the time of day.

Coreground: Now you get some time and space to end rumours about you, your band or anyone else?.

JK: I haven't heard any rumours about me or the band in a long time, but I'd just like to say, before any rumours do start, that the bands breaking up, isn't because of anyone losing their edge, or anything like that, I just felt that it was time, and we had accomplished pretty much everything we set out to do.

Coreground: Anything left to say? Then just do it! And thanks a lot for your time and patience!

JK: Thanks alot for the interview. I just wanna say thanx to all our friends in Europe, all the kids who have supported Burden over the years, and on our two European tours, Simone at allschools.net and Onfire Promotions, and Andreas & Benny of Dead Serious Recordings for believing in us, and all they have done, we couldn't have done it without you.
Thanx. Jason xxx
