Interviews Stories Interview mit Michiel von Uppercut (Maastricht, 09.08.2002) 1. Die erste Frage ist ein wenig allgemein gehalten. Wir würden gerne was über die Entstehungsgeschichte der Band wissen. Wie wurde Uppercut gegründet? Wir begannen 1995, entstanden aus der Asche einer Band namens……..wie hieß die noch mal?? Es war die alte Band Brainless. Unser Schlagzeuger und unser jetziger Bassist, sie spielten in der Band. Und diese Band hörte auf und sie wollten wieder eine OldSchool-band machen, so haben sie Robin, unseren Gitarristen, gefragt, ob er in einer OldSchool-Band spielen wollte und er kannte mich, so begannen wir 1995. Wir haben im gleichen Jahr ein Demo aufgenommen und angefangen Shows zu spielen. 2. Was für eine Art Musik habt ihr davor gemacht? Es war so ziemlich die gleiche Art von Musik, aber schlechter. Ja, wir waren richtig schlecht. Wir hatten ein wenig Beatdown und ein wenig stärkeren NYHC Einfluss, aber hauptsächlich war es das Gleiche, was wir jetzt spielen. 3. Was sind die Einflüsse auf eure Musik und was sind eure Lieblingsbands? Jede OldSchool HC Band von damals, von ca. ´85 bis ´90. Unsere wichtigsten Einflüsse kommen von SOIA und Minor Threat. Vielleicht kann man es aus dem, was wir spielen, raushören, es ist ein wenig SOIA und Minor Threat. Wir spielen auch noch immer ein Minor Threat Cover live. Das sind zwei meiner Lieblingsbands, aber ich mag auch Sachen wie Black Flag, Face To Face, eben ein wenig von diesen melodischen Punk Rock Sachen. 4. Was ist die Botschaft in eurer Musik? Habt ihr überhaupt eine? So als Band haben wir keine Botschaft, aber man kann vielleicht einiges in meinen Texten finden. Aber das sind vor allem persönliche Dinge, es geht um Typen, die ich hasse, Sachen, die ich hasse, Dinge, die ich nicht mag und die ich mag. Es gibt Lieder über´s Skateboarden, über Szenedinge, Lieder über Freundschaft, Straight Edge… 5. Schreibst du die Texte? Ja, das mach ich. 6. Was bedeutet für dich der Ausdruck Straight Edge?  Zu aller erst… wir sind keine sXe Band. Ich bin der Einzige, der sXe ist. Für mich bedeutet es: keine Drogen, kein Alkohol. 7. Aber du bist nicht Veganer? Nein, ich bin nicht einmal Vegetarier. Dafür, dass ich nicht vegetarisch lebe, fange ich mir noch immer jede Menge Probleme ein. Aber es geht dabei nicht um Straight Edge. Man muss nur das Minor Threat Lied anhören. Wo steht denn da was von : "Esst kein Fleisch?" 8. Das bringt uns direkt zur nächsten Frage. Was denkst du über all die sXe Hardliner? Denkst du, dass sie die ganze Bewegung gefährden? Ich denke, dass sie Straight Edge ziemlich dumm erscheinen lassen und deswegen mag ich diese Sache nicht. Für mich ist Straight Edge wie Minor Threat und all die ´88er Bands wie YOT,Gorilla Biscuits, Chain Of Strength, Wide Awake, Side By Side. Für mich geht´s nicht darum, ein harter Typ zu sein oder gewalttätig gegenüber anderen Menschen zu sein oder andere Menschen nicht zu respektieren. Es ist einfach was, das ich für mich selbst mache. 9. Was ist deine Meinung zu Leuten, die Straight Edge als eine Mode sehen und die nur Straight Edge sind, weil es gerade in oder modern ist? Das ist total dumm. Ich habe da nicht mehr dazu zu sagen. Es ist einfach blöd. Du musst das für dich selbst machen, nicht weil´s gerade im Trend ist. 10. Sag uns mal was zu deiner Haltung gegenüber Bands wie Strife, die nicht mehr Straight Edge sind und noch immer ihre alten sXe Lieder spielen. Die Sache bei Strife ist, dass sie ihren Namen hätten ändern sollen. Es ist nicht mehr Strife, es ist eine komplett andere Band mit total anderen Einstellungen. Ich kann nicht ihr Leben für sie leben, wenn diese Typen nicht mehr Straight Edge sein wollen, ist es ok, aber es ist eben nicht mehr Strife. 11. Was sind eure Zukunftspläne?  So viele Shows wie möglich! 12. Wollt ihr ne große Europatour machen? Kommt ihr nach Deutschland? Wir würden es lieben. Ich habe mal in einer anderen Band gespielt und meine erste Show war in Deutschland. Es war in… Scheiße, hab´s vergessen… irgendwo im Ruhrpott, zusammen mit Black Friday und Death Or Glory. Also ich würde sehr gerne mit Uppercut nach Deutschland kommen. Aber wahrscheinlich machen wir eine U.K. Tour Ende Oktober. Es werden so fünf Shows sein. Also keine große Tour. Aber ich würde wirklich gerne so viele Shows wie möglich überall in Deutschland spielen. 13. Wie siehst du die Rolle von Uppercut unter all den niederländischen ToughGuy Bands wie Backfire, Discipline etc? Ich betrachte uns als den frischen oder neuen Wind. Es gibt viele andere niederländische Bands, die nicht in der ToughGuy Szene sind, aber ich sehe uns als eine von den besseren. Bands wie Backfire und Born From Pain sind wirklich gute Bands, aber ich würde gerne mehr OldSchool Bands sehen. Aber ich weiß, was ihr meint: die Niederlande werden repräsentiert durch viele ToughGuy Bands, das nervt. Ich würde gerne mehr Bands wie Uppercut oder Mainstrike sehen, na ja ich weiß auch nicht so recht. 14. Unterstützt du noch immer die niederländische Fußballnationalmannschaft? Die Sache ist, dass jedes Mal, wenn eine große Meisterschaft ist, ich mir sage: " Ich werd´s nicht ansehen, ich werd´s nicht ansehen, sie werden wieder verlieren, sie werden wieder verlieren!" Aber dieses Mal gab´s gar keine Gelegenheit für mich zuzuschauen, weil sie verloren hatten und nicht bei der WM waren. 15. Mögen Uppercut wie alle niederländischen Bands Fußball? Klar. Unser Bassist ist Westham United Fan. Wir mögen Fußball. 16. Was denkst du über solche Interviews? Magst du es? Ich mag´s, das ist ok. Es ist ziemlich neu, wir sind ne Band seit sieben Jahren und seit letztem Jahr kriegen wir Interviewanfragen, besonders für richtige Interviews. Normalerweise… also damals hat mir jemand ein Brief mit nem Haufen Fragen geschickt und ich habe sie beantwortet und den den Brief zurückgeschickt. Wir bekommen auch viele Emailinterviews, aber ich mag das hier lieber. Das macht Spaß.  17. Zum Schluss noch was, was du uns gerne sagen würdest? Die Leute sollten wieder Lernen wie man richtig Stagediving macht. Kein Karate Zeugs und kein Kickboxen. Darum geht es nicht, es geht darum abzugehen, die Hütte auseinander zu nehmen. Rumrennen, durchdrehen, stagediving. Lernt, wie man das richtig macht! Danke für´s Interview, hat uns gefallen. Patrick und Jan Interview with Michiel from Uppercut (Maastricht, 09.08.2002) 1. The first question is a bit general. We would like to know something about your band history. How was the band Uppercut founded ? We started out in 1995, out of the ashes of a band called … what was that band? It`s the old band of Brainless. Our Drummer and our current bass player, they played in that band. And that band broke up and they wanted to do an old school outfit again, so they asked Robin, our guitar player, to see if he wanted to do an old school band and he knew me, so we started in 1995. We recorded a demo the same year and started playing shows. 2. What kind of music did you play before ? It was pretty much the same kind of stuff but worse. Yeah, we sucked. We had a little bit of beatdown influences and a little bit more New York Hardcore but mainly it was the same kind of stuff we play now. 3. What are the influences in your music and what are your favourite bands ?  Any old school hardcore band from back in the days, from like ´85 to ´90. Our biggest influences are Sick Of It All, Minor Threat. Maybe you can hear that in the sound we are playing, it´s a little bit of Sick Of It All and Minor Threat. We still play a Minor Threat cover song live. Those are two of my favourite bands, but also stuff like Black Flag, Face To Face, a little bit of that melodic punk rock stuff. 4. What´s the message in your music ? Do you got any ? As a band we don´t have a message but maybe you could find some stuff in my lyrics. But this is mostly personal, it´s about kids I hate, stuff I hate, stuff I don´t like, stuff I do like. There are songs about skateboarding, stuff about the scene, songs about friendship, straight edge … 5. Do you write the lyrics ? I do. 6. What does the term straight edge means to you ? First of all, we are not a straight edge band, I´m the only straight edge member. To me it means being straight edge: no drugs, no alcohol. 7. But you are not vegan ? No, I´m not even vegetarian. I still catch a lot of shit for that stuff, for not being vegetarian. But that´s not straight edge. Just listen to the Minor Threat song, where does it say: Don´t eat meat ! 8. That leads us to the next question. What do you think about all the straight edge hardliners ? Do you think they endanger the whole movement ? I think they make straight edge seem pretty silly and that´s why I don´t like that stuff. To me straight edge is like Minor Threat and all the 88´ bands like Youth Of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Chain Of Strength, Wide Awake, Side By Side. To me it´s not about being a tough guy or being violent towards other people or disrespect other people. It´s just something I do for myself.  9. What´s your opinion on people that see straight edge as a temporary fashion and that are only straight edge because it´s up to date or modern or something ? That´s totally stupid and silly. I don´t really have anything more to say about that. It´s just silly. You got to do that stuff for yourself, not because it´s trendy. 10. Tell us your attitude towards bands like Strife that lost the edge and still play the old straight edge songs ! The thing with Strife is, they should have changed their name. It´s not Strife anymore, it´s a completely different band, they have different attitudes. I can´t live their lifes for them, if those guys wanna break the edge it´s o.k. but it´s not Strife anymore. 11. What are your plans for the future ? Play as many fucking shows as possible. 12. Do you wanna do a big European Tour ? Do you come to Germany ? We would love that. I played in another band and played my first show in Germany. It was in … fuck I forgot … somewhere in the Ruhrpott Area, together with Black Friday and Death Or Glory. So I would love to come to Germany with Uppercut. But probably we gotta do a U.K. Tour in late october. It´s gonna be like 5 shows. So it´s not a big tour. But I would love to play as much as possible everywhere in Germany. 13. How do you see the status of Uppercut among all the Dutch tough guy bands like Backfire, Discipline and so on ? I consider ourselves like a fresh wind or a new wind. There are a lot of other Dutch bands who are not really in that tough guy scene but I consider ourselves to be of the better ones. Bands like Born From Pain and Backfire, they are really good bands but I would like to see more old school outfits. But I know what you are mean, the Netherlands are being represented by more tough guy bands, that sucks. I would love to see more bands like Uppercut or Mainstrike, I don´t know. 14. Are you still supporting the Dutch national soccer team ? The thing is, when there is a big championship, I´m always like I´m not gonna watchin´, I´m not gonna watchin´, they gonna lose again, they gonna lose again. But this time there was no chance for me to watch it because they lost and were not in the world cup. 15. But does Uppercut also like football like all the Dutch bands ? Yeah. Our bass player is a Westham United fan. We like soccer. 16. What do you think about those kind of interviews ? Do you like it ? I like it, that´s o.k. It´s pretty new, we´ve been a band for 7 years and since the last year we´re getting request for interviews, especially face to face interviews. Usually we … back in the days, someone wrote me a letter with a bunch of questions and I answered them and sent the letter back. We´ve also getting email interviews but I prefer this kind of stuff. That´s fun. 17. Finally, is there still something you would like to tell us ? The people should learn how to stage dive again. No karate stuff and no kickboxing. It´s not about that, it´s about going wild, just smashing a place. Running around, acting crazy, stage diving. Learn how to stage dive. Thanks for your time, we appreciate that.
